Q: Dear Mr. Franchise, I want to do some fundraisers with charities and raise awareness about my business through charitable work, any suggestions?
A: Craig, this is a great initiative, you can’t do enough in this world for the charities that exist. In the organizations I deal with we try to raise awareness about different charities that we support by allowing our staff time to do volunteer work and also coordinating fundraisers in our venues. That being said, I am not an expert in this area, so I contacted Rea Ganesh, Senior Development Officer at Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation of Toronto for some additional feedback on how you can plug your company into more charities.
Rea says “That there are a number of ways that you can raise awareness for your business and at the same time raise money for an important cause. Recently, cause-marketing has become an important marketing tool for many businesses. Have you noticed the “pink ribbon” items in stores? The concept is that if a customer purchases a “pink ribbon” item, a portion of the money spent will go back to help the charity. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.” Rea also mentions sponsoring charitable events or hosting your own event where possible.
“Host your own event. This can vary in a number of ways. You could simply have a BBQ in front of your business encouraging people to buy a hamburger for charity and at the same time giving them a business flyer promoting your business”
Craig, if there is one thing I would like to encourage while doing this, don’t be shy! I know a lot of companies that give to charity and don’t want the recognition for the work they’re doing. I completely understand where they are coming from, but I have to tell you, I don’t agree with it. The one thing that is more important than giving, is encouraging others to give as well. By letting people know about the work you’re doing, you are setting an example for other people to support charities, especially the one you choose to help. It is also a fantastic feeling for your staff to feel like they are contributing to something greater than themselves and that their boss is a really fantastic guy!
